History

The Mattagami Region Source Protection Committee used science-based information, and knowledge provided by working groups and the community, to develop a source protection plan to protect our drinking water.

Milestones

Watershed Characterization Report (Completed)

This document reports on all aspects of our local watershed including descriptions and maps of our local water resources, analysis of water quality and quantity conditions and trends and identification of potential issues.

Water Budget (Completed)

This document looks at the amount of water coming into our region and the amount going out. As with a financial budget, knowing what is coming in, in relation to how much is going out is vital to planning for the future. We need to know how much water is coming into our watersheds and from where; how the water is used; how it exits our watersheds and what’s left over; all vital information required to develop a plan to protect it.

Study Vulnerable Areas (Completed)

Some areas may be at risk of contamination or overuse. This work involves identifying the extent of each of these areas, assessing their vulnerability and considering threats and issues to the water source that may exist now or in the future.

Risk Assessment (Completed)

Based on initial findings, risks to water quality and quantity for each vulnerable area will be assessed. Risks may be significant, moderate, low or negligible.

Develop Terms of Reference for the Source Protection Committee (Completed)

The Source Protection Committee developed a Terms of Reference to guides the work to be done . The Terms of Reference includes a work plan and budget that outlines the work of the committee, staff team, municipalities and consultants to produce our Source Protection Plan. This Terms of Reference was completed in 2008 as required by regulation under the Clean Water Act.

Compile an Assessment Report (Completed)

The Source Protection Committee consulted with the municipality and the community about a draft Assessment Report that incorporates all of the technical findings. The report was then submitted by the Mattagami Region Source Protection Authority to the province for approval. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks approved the Committee’s Assessment Report on October 7, 2010.

Prepare a Source Water Protection Plan (Completed)

Following consultation with local residents and the City of Timmins, a Source Protection Plan was developed by the Mattagami Region Source Protection Committee. It was submitted by the Mattagami Region Source Protection Authority to the province for review and approval.

Source Protection Plan Approval (Completed)

The Proposed Mattagami Region Source Protection Plan was reviewed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. The Source Protection Plan was approved by the Minister in April 2014, with an effective date of October 1, 2014.

Implementation, Monitoring and Updating (2014 and beyond)

The approved Source Water Protection Plan was implemented by the municipality, local agencies, stakeholder organizations, businesses and individuals. The Mattagami Region Source Protection Authority provides annual progress reports to the Province regarding the progress made on implementing the source protection plan. The Source Water Protection Plan will be updated periodically.

Assessment Report and Source Protection Plan Updates (2019)

Updates to Mattagami’s Assessment Report and Source Protection Plan under section 36 of the Clean Water Act are required to be submitted to the Province by September 30, 2019.
