George Hughes

Source Protection Committee Chair

George Hughes, Chairman of the Mattagami Region Source Protection Committee (MRSPC) was appointed by the Minister of the Environment on August 20, 2007.

George Hughes of Timmins, was employed with Xstrata Copper for 30 years in various scientific, technical and management capacities. After retirement he served as the Applied Research Officer at Northern College, Research Director at the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation at Laurentian University, Vice-Chair of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation and, Vice-Chair of the City of Timmins Committee of Adjustment. As a senior member of the American Society for Quality, Mr. Hughes is a certified master black belt in statistical, change-management, six-sigma and lean process technologies, and industrial productivity applied research. He studied biology toward a B.Sc. and Certificate in genetics, continuing with M.Sc. and Ph.D. research studies at the University of Western Ontario. He also holds a M.Ed. degree in student at-risk research from Nipissing University.
